Memorial Day
At 7:30 am local time on May 29 2004 Islamists disguised as Saudi police stormed facilities at Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation. After gunning down numerous civilians and security personnel the bandits managed to barricade themselves in an apartment block and take between 20 and 50 hostages.
Radio reports indicate that the Islamists then began sorting people based on their religion -- Muslims released, infidels detained.
The Nazi-like division of human beings based on religious conviction should galvanize everyone who is not a Muslim. It should shock and it should outrage.
No matter what happens to those detained there will be people -- infidels -- who still apologize and rationalize this kind of Islamist operation. They will justify their activities and goals. Yet Islamist goals as stated repeatedly in theoretical writings and operational manifestos are grounded in an extraordinary bigotry that has been fully condemned by the enlightened occident and far east for centuries.
But condemnation or not the most horrific examples of this kind of brutality happened in Europe. For the Germans of the Nazi era it was the Jews who were to be attacked and eliminated -- for they were not fully human. And eliminated they were. The Nazis divided the Jews from the true human beings, just like the Islamist soldiers in Khobar today have separated infidels from the true human beings -- the Muslims.
It's as if they hold Nazi Germany as a positive example.
For them, it is the infidel who is to be separated off. It is the infidel who is not fully human. It's the infidel who will be enslaved, expelled, or exterminated.
It's poignant and sad indeed that on this Memorial Day weekend we find that Islamists are involved in precisely the same kind of behavior that Nazis engaged in during Adolf Hitler's reign. The very activity that tens of thousands of US servicemen and women died fighting against during World War II.
The raids on Khobar should awaken all people who qualify as infidels in the vocabulary of the Islamist.
Infidels can sit quiet and watch as their fellows are slaughtered because they are not Muslims. They can rationalize that the victims simply shouldn't be in Muslim lands if Muslims don't want them there. They can even say the victims "deserved it" because they were stealing Muslim wealth -- a favorite claim made by the followers of imperialist theory.
And every one of those statments was said about the Jew in Nazi Germany.
I am not one of the infidels who will rationalize and apologize this Nazi-like activity.
I believe that Muslims should be outraged by what their fellow believers are fomenting from the Mosque, and acting on in the field. But I don't see that outrage.
Where is the anger they so readily express when someone criticizes Islam in a way they think is unfair? Where are the choruses of condemnation for the dehumanizing of entire hemispheres of this earth peopled by non-Muslims? I ask a simple question: when will a non-Muslim be able to live and work in Muslim lands without fear of being taken hostage or shot down or hacked to death or even beheaded by the living wardens of modern era Nazism -- Osama bin Laden and his loosely affiliated cadre of jackbooted Islamist thugs?
When?
If Muslims cannot or will not strike down this fascistic ideology then those who would be its victims have every right to destroy it -- by whatever means necessary.

Settling Old Scores
When you spend some quality time with the Islamist authors reprinted on IslamistWatch one of the things that sticks out is a bizarre obsession with centuries old battles between Christians and Muslims. In particular Osama Bin Laden's writings are FILLED with references to the past glories of the so-called Islamic Nation, which is the Nation for which Bin Laden is fighting, the Nation for which Bin Laden has begun to attack secular systems of government (largely Christian, but also India has had much trouble from Islamic militancy).
So the blasts in Spain seem to have Islamist origins, at least they are being claimed by the Islamist scourge, and now Muslims have been arrested for connection with the case. On the one hand the missives suggest that the attacks were done in retaliation for Spain's assistence in the invasion of Iraq. This is a patent maneuver to influence Spains elections. If I were Spanish and had planned to vote against Aznar's party, I would now change my vote to support Aznar's party. Why? Because whatever the militant Islamist wants to happen most is exactly what I would not have done. There is no cause that they support that can be to my benefit. They don't want Aznar's party in power because Aznar's party is giving the Islamist cause problems.
But of course the true underlying reason why the attacks were performed has not left out: retribution for the Moors being driven from Spain over 500 years ago. Let's quote from the Telegraph, UK:
A group close to bin Laden's al-Qa'eda network, the Brigade of Abu Hafs al-Masri, sent a message to a London-based Arabic newspaper explaining the reasons for attacking Spain.
"This is part of settling old accounts with Spain, the crusader and America's ally in its war against Islam," the statement said.
...
The year 1492, when Granada was ceded to Ferdinand and Isabella, is a talismanic date for some Islamist scholars who consider it as the beginning of the decline of the Muslim world which continues to this day.
...
Last year after a wait of more than 500 years, Spanish Muslims succeeded in building a mosque in the shadow of the Alhambra, once the symbol of Islamic power in Europe.
History points finger at revenge for lost Moor kingdom
I should note that the article above was written before the recent tape surfaced and is based on the note sent to a London based arabic newspaper.
The point I want to raise is that Bin Laden's writings and the writings of other Islamists make no bones about one of the goals of their movement being to reclaim ALL LANDS once or currently occupied by Muslims for the Islamic Nation. Spain, of all the western European powers, is one of the most glittering targets, for just before being driven from the Iberian penninsula in the 1490s, Muslims accounted for more than three quarters of the population.

Small planes are going to be the weapon of the future for Islamist operatives. I'm surprised it's taken them this long to use them. I'm surprised they tried it in Saudi Arabia first, since that blows the scheme and the secular security apparatus will now have a chance to focus on small plane security issues.
Saudi Police Foil Airliner Attack
I've written numerous times that the best way to cause widescale destruction of the type currently being hyped by Islamists would be to detonate a small nuclear device in a small plane over a US city. If America is to suffer spectacular "back breaking assaults" by Islamists, it can only happen with multiple nuclear strikes (here an excerpt from linked story):
DUBAI, DECEMBER 26: A London-based Arab magazine said on Friday that Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has vowed to launch a ‘‘back-breaking attack’’ on the US by February, confirming an earlier message by the militant network. The weekly al-Majalla said it received an e-mail from Abu Mohammed al-Ablaj, a little known Al Qaeda member, saying bin Laden would release a video tape in which he affirms his group’s determination to fight the US.
‘‘A messenger of bin Laden informed him (Ablaj) that the Al Qaeda leader will appear on a televised tape after the execution of an operation which bin Laden described as back-breaking and which would change the order of things,’’ al-Majalla said in a report in its latest edition.
‘‘They (Americans) should prepare...their coffins, hospitals and graves. The coming days will be full of surprises and great events which will make them a historic example,’’ the magazine quoted Ablaj as saying. The report came after US officials ordered their colour-coded alert system raised to orange, the second highest level, citing possible year-end attacks.
Less than nuclear it won't be spectacular, less than multiple it won't be back-breaking.

Attack Until America Is Defeated from www.theage.com.au
Al-Qaeda issues fresh threat
December 26, 2003 - 8:05AM
Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden will issue the next of his video messages after a massive attack on US territory, Saudi weekly Al-Majallah quotes an official of the terror network as saying, in its next edition.
Quoting an e-mail received from a man who goes by the name of Abu Mohammed al-Ablaj, the weekly reports that "an emissary of bin Laden has informed me that the al-Qaeda chief's (next) appearance (on video cassette) will come after a deadly, far-reaching operation on American territory.
"In the video, bin Laden will evoke the success of his backers in once again striking the United States to the core and America's failure (in its anti-terrorist campaign) both outside and inside the country," the al-Qaeda official was reported as saying in the e-mail.
"Bin Laden will also reaffirm al-Qaeda's determination to continue its war against America, until its defeat," said the message from Ablaj, who last February announced to the Saudi weekly that bin Laden would release a video statement after the US-led war in Iraq.
The most recent message alleged to be from bin Laden was an audiotape broadcast last week by Dubai-based Al-Arabiya satellite channel, but its Qatar-based rival Al-Jazeera said the tape was the same one it had aired more extensively on October 18.
Both Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, the leading Arab news channels, have been accused by US officials of inciting violence by airing such tapes of al-Qaeda leaders as well as those of deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein before he was captured by US forces on December 13. They have denied the charge.
A day before the alleged bin Laden tape was aired, Al-Jazeera broadcast a tape purported to be from bin Laden's right-hand man Ayman al-Zawahiri, in which he said the Americans were beginning to stagger under the blows of al-Qaeda.
A US intelligence official said in Washington that CIA analysts had concluded that the Zawahiri tape was "most likely" authentic.
The report in the Saudi weekly came as Americans celebrated a nervous Christmas under heightened terrorist alerts and tight security nationwide.
Most of the people I know say "talk is cheap" or some such thing, when one of these threats is issued by the Islamists.
The part that is striking is that Bin Laden is quoted as saying that Al Qaeda will continue its assault until America is defeated. It seems that at their present rate that will take several lifetimes. America might defeat itself, and I suppose that is what Bin Laden and his jihadis really hope for. If they inflict enough blows over a long enough period of time, America might be rent asunder by its own internal political conflicts, or collapse because of economic problems, like the Soviet Union did.
But the economy of the United States today can't be compared to the economy of the Soviet Union, the numbers in the US are real, not fabricated, and so it seems that hope is a long shot at best.

Imminent Attack
According to Debkafile Al Qaeda is warning Muslims to leave the United States as an attack is imminent and will be so surprising, swift, and powerful that troops in Muslim countries will be cut off from the United States.
The only attack that could do such a thing would involve a hit on the nerve center of the US military, the Pentagon and/or the Washington DC area.
And what could be done?
Only a fission device detonated in the air (eg a suitcase nuke -- which the Islamists are reputed to have via numerous paths) could cause such calamity for America, flown into range in a small plane.
Chemical weapons have never been adequate over large areas, a delivery system like a truck or plane would be stopped before it paralyzed the entire city.
A nuclear assault via a fission device would likely cause close to 100,000 immediate deaths, as the bombs in Nagasaki and Hiroshima did.
There is no other way to lay waste to American command and control.
I would predict that if there is an assault of that kind AND it is to happen soon then they will try for Thanksgiving, as they know it is a holiday in the US and such a blow during a fairly religious holiday in a Christian nation could be advertised as the harsh judgement of Allah on the unbelievers.
Heaven forbid there are 100,000 American casualties in a Muslim A-bomb attack on United States soil.
There would be -- and should be -- relentless military counter strikes in the fallout, and I would predict that the Middle East and Islam would be changed forever. The Middle East because the US would no longer play softball with the regimes in Syria, Egypt, Iran, Libya, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia (or the tribal regions of Pakistan and Yemen, the Sudan and Somalia), but might actually launch major offensives to rid those region of theocratic regimes.
As for Islam the message would simple: No more rifles, no more car bombs, no more Jihad. No more of that if you want to live.
If the world finds Bush's policies too aggressive after the attacks of 9/11, just wait until a nuclear assault is carried out against America. Then there really might be a war of Christians against Muslims, the Islamists bringing their own propaganda into sad reality.
from Debka: Al Qaeda: Countdown for “biggest operation yet inside America”. Monday, November 24, Al Qaeda marked Eid al Fitr, the festival closing the Muslim festival of Ramadan, with a dramatic warning. DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources reports that a message published over al Qaeda’s electronic channels and websites declared that the countdown has begun for the biggest operation ever carried out in the United States. “The big blow will fall very shortly. It will consist of a series of surprise attacks that will cut America off from communication with its armies in Muslim countries.” The reference is clearly to US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The largest number, around 115,000 soldiers, is present in Iraq.
Muslims living in the United States are urged to “take advantage of the short time left” to escape the country and harm’s way.
Some of the messages say that a new Osama bin Laden videotape will soon be out. It will also carry statements by al Qaeda members who executed the last suicide attacks in Saudi Arabia and adherents who died in clashes with Saudi security. They will be shown describing how they were prepared for action. Bin Laden will intersperse these cuts with comments explaining the selection of Saudi targets.
DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources report that some of the new messages are signed by Abu Assam al Yamani, who also threatens to murder Abdul Rahman Rashid, editor of the Saudi London-based paper Sharq al Awsat. Al Yamani says the al Qaeda passed sentence of death against the editor because he not only met President George W. Bush in the British capital last week but interviewed him and appeared with the president in a joint photo.

The times, they are a changin'
Well, maybe they are.
I wanted to post some links to analysis about democracy in the Middle East. I have often felt that US foreign policy was not truly guided by an interest in spreading democracy. US foreign policy, like that of all European states, and all other states I've investigated, is driven by an opportunism of the moment. One can see that in our foreign policy of the past regarding Chile, where CIA and state department officials (like Henry Kissenger ...) were involved in fomenting an authoritarian overthrow of a democratic government. That was an idiotic mistake, paid for by the blood of many Chileans. And the reason was economic or political favoritism (a reaction to Allende's nationalization of copper mines, owned and operated by US interests). There are other examples (Iran, for instance).
It is high time to reverse such behavior. The US needs stick to the advancement of democracy and make that a significant if not overriding factor in its foreign policy.
That is why I welcomed Bush's speech at the National Endowment for Democracy on November 6th.
Critics BLAST this man because he is a "simpleton", a "moron", an "idiot", etc and so forth. Perhaps so. But I like the simple ideas and goals he holds to, even if I have issues with the way he has chosen to accomplish them.
What, is it supposed to be a BAD THING that the peoples of the Middle East should have civil liberties?
Osama bin Laden thinks so. Civil liberties, according to him (and Islamists in general), are the defining mark of the infidel.
I also note that many people lambast Bush for this speech without ever having bothered to read it. We become so emotionally attached to our political positions that we shut our eyes.
Regularly.
Here's a link to the text (video feed) for those who can still open their brains:
WhiteHouse: President Bush Discusses Freedom in Iraq and Middle East
Here's some analysis of that speech:
DefendDemocracy: Ahead of the Curve
I read the speech, and, frankly, with a naive reading can find nothing to object to. Of course America haters across the globe will call it hipocracy and point to CIA missions and state department policy of the past that are in contradiction. But the key phrase is: OF THE PAST.
And there are the many who do not believe democracy is a good thing at all: Islamists, other theocrats, monarchists, and statists of the faschistic, socialistic or some other persuasion.
Only time will tell if the Bush administration and subsequent US administrations, Republican, Democrat, or other, hold true to the principles laid down in the speech. I believe that there will be no lasting peace in this world unless government is made to bend directly or indirectly to the will of the people, rather than the other way around.
There is no significant history of democracies attacking other democracies.
Al Qaeda Manual
Here's a link to some analysis of the Al Qaeda manual. It's an interesting start, some of it I find quite compelling, though I'm less interested in the attempts to discredit certain monotheisms in comparison to other monotheisms.

I haven't posted in ages mostly because I thought the last post, which dealt with the world the Islamists offer secular societies vs. their world remained pertinent.
There's a translation of a recent interview by a purported Islamist operative in Iraq, near Fallujah. It's a worthwhile read, as it predicts 100,000 American deaths in an attack that is supposed to happen within this Ramadan.
You'd think that would hurt Muslims and Islam more than it would help.
But the other interesting aspect of the interview is that he plainly states what the Islamist goal is.

What American Independence Doesn't Mean
Today is the official birthday of the United States of America. Americans are celebrating their freedom today, their independence, and marking the sacrifice of many of its citizens on behalf of those freedoms.
It is a fitting time to look at what the Islamists are offering Americans (and all other free peoples) as an alternative way to live: Shariah Law.
Shariah Law is largely derived from the Sunnah, which are a collection of writings telling anecdotes about their prophet Muhammad's life: his sayings, actions, leadership, and rulings. The goal of Shariah is to govern the relations of men and women according to the word of Allah. Shariah is supposed to be divine. However, Shariah is not codified in the Quran as it is written or practiced today. Instead, Islamic scholars have patched together a body of law that combine rules from Arab traditions, some explicit rules from the Quran, and rules extrapolated from the Sunnah. Muslim scholars might be able to convince religious non-Muslims that Shariah is at least in part divinely inspired, but Shariah is by no means the word and only the word of Allah.
Shariah is meant to be the final arbiter of all laws, and to supercede so-called Man-made laws.
What are man made laws?
The US Constitution and the Amendments to the Constitution are a wonderful example of man-made laws.
Islamists wish to abolish and obliterate this set of laws -- the sooner, the better.
The Islamists proclaim that the US Constitution, and all other documents which establish secular rule of law, are against Allah.
That is worth thinking about in these strident times. It is worth considering when you reflect about the Bush Administration's aggressive approach in the so-called "war on terror"(1). It is worth considering when one looks at what is happening in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, Chechnya, the Balkans, and in many countries in the horn of Africa and in Asia.
I hope this July 4th brings better times for all peoples, and those sacrificing their lives in the line of duty for freedom, I hope their sacrifice will bear sweet results -- namely the casting off of religious shackles of any kind and the establishment of non-theocratic states across the globe, and the acceptance of all Muslims of the senselessness and foolishness of perpetual Islamic Jihad.
